if you're a teenager wanting to become an author or someone a little older who have chosen to retire and write, there is little to compare with the thrill to see your byline in your favorite magazine or your name on the cover of the book.
This May sound like an impossible, but it is within accept anyone who speaks English, spell adequately well and know at least basic grammar. And of course, you know what you are talking about.
Call the background
Stop and think about the possibilities. Ideas for articles and books around, so it is often wise to start writing about topics you know and understand. Write about issues dealing with every day. For example:
O You're a housewife . You can easily become an expert on topics such as home decorating, specialty cooking, raising children, perhaps even care for pets. Your articles can be funny or it can be very informative, serious piece. Whatever you choose, first spend some time reading several women's magazines carefully. You'll be amazed to discover that much writing is really mediocre. This should give you confidence that you will probably do as well.
O Now you are employed . Spend a little time views of business publications in its field. In many of these, you'll find the writing is worse than in women's magazines. This is because the editors of business publications are hungry for new articles that offer valuable information for your readers. For these editors, your knowledge on the subject is far more important than your writing skills.
O You are retired and want to write . What a perfect time in my life to start this new party (or career) retirement writing. time to reflect on his life and write his memoirs. You may want to keep some contact with his former career. Trade publications would love to hear from you. Even better, now that you have time, you might want to tackle the entire book, if that's your dream. However, I recommend starting with a few articles.
They can always be expanded in the book.
Building your portfolio
There is no question that are disadvantaged because they do not have a portfolio of your work to show the editor. However, this does not necessarily mean that you have come to an insurmountable barrier against.
Periodicals come in many different levels. Are generally classified by size of their circulation base, but there are quite a number of specialized journals, which offer a small but highly targeted, readership. And there are lots of community newspapers to help you start building your portfolio.
I strongly suggest starting at the bottom. Think of this as climbing the ladder rungs. Begin by offering articles to your community newspaper. After a few have been accepted and published, step up your local newspaper or small town or a regional magazine. Clip and save everything you write and publish. Move up the ladder to greater regionals, and even at the state level before they tackle the national magazine publications.
a great way to open the door to major journals to write short pieces for the front journal. Most of these, and often are looking for content. Some citizens to maintain regional section where acceptance is somewhat easier for a relative unknown. With this in mind, you should have little trouble eventually landing a major feature in one of the best releases.
Taking the first step
Once you have confidence in your abilities, do not be afraid to take a big step up. Plan your approach carefully, relying on their experience and their success, as I suggested above. You have raised four children, one with dyslexia. Bolstered by a little research, you are an expert on how to lead and encourage your child as he / she is struggling to overcome this deficiency during the school year. Furthermore, you are very experienced parent, and you can select a number of different entities in terms of raising a child to write about.
On paper, chart the advantages offered by the editor. Expand on each category, with short paragraphs of a few sentences. Sort through all of them, and decide which ones you think are the most convincing. These are for personal use. Do not send them to the editor.
head to the library or on the computer and run a search on your subject you have chosen. When you feel that you have collected enough information to write well about this issue, improve their minds in order to determine which approach you take to help you write interesting and informative. This is called the development "angle" or "hook ."
Moving On
When it all organized and very clear in your mind, you're ready to write. In essence, you've planned the whole article, either in your head or on paper. I suggest the latter, at least in the early attempts. This simplifies the writing, and keeps you on track.
You know you want to say, and let the words flow. Do not stop to puzzle the way you express any thought. You can always go back later and revise. For now, do not interrupt the "roll " you're on.
Since you're just beginning to write, I suggest the end of the article before you consider contacting the editor. Later, you will learn how to query an editor with the idea before taking the time to write it in full. But for now, you're going to have to complete an article to convince an editor that can produce what the magazine needs.
Where to Publish
Then you must decide where to send their queries and their manuscripts. There are a lot of fine directories of newspapers and magazines which can be found in the reference room of the library. I recommend Writer's Market for start-up authors. It offers a wealth of information that will help you choose the best journal for your piece.
ads are filed under the general categories. Overview of all journals listed under the topic that best suits you. Writer's Market will tell you the right person to contact and how to access the editor. You'll learn what subjects interest editors, article length is preferred, salary, the waiting period between acceptance and publication, and many other useful information. If you continue to write, I recommend you buy your personal copy of Writer's Market.
You May find that writing articles suits your schedule and your desires perfectly. It is an ideal way to expand your knowledge as you write about a wide range of topics. Many writers whose names are household words have never crafted book. But, they have established a great reputation. There is no reason why you can not join their ranks.
